The Black Codes were rules that African Americans had to follow after the Civil War ended. African Americans were not granted all rights, but they had a few more than they did before the Civil War. It was also made illegal for a black person to marry a white person. These laws were not liked by the Northeners, because they thought that whites in the South were trying to regain slavery.
